Hi, I’m Louise, I’m one of the therapy assistants working alongside the Speech and Language (SaLT) and Occupational therapist (OT) here at Channels and Choices.
I support the SaLT and OT by facilitating the delivery of therapeutic interventions to the children, staff, and foster carers within the community to promote the independence and communication of the young people in our care.
I have worked with children for over 8 years, mainly based in early years within a mainstream primary school supporting teaching and learning. During this time, I completed my university diploma in supporting teaching and learning at Canterbury Christ Church university.
As well as supporting the class teachers, my role consisted of ensuring pupils were able to access the curriculum. I did this by carrying out effective assessment and intervention, having a secure knowledge of the early years’ curriculum and liaising with parents, SENCO, and health professionals. This established strong partnerships and support for identified pupils.
I thoroughly enjoyed this however, I had a very rewarding year working with a child with severe communication difficulties which sparked my interest in speech and language. This shaped my journey to the role I am in now. I am also accessing further study in counselling skills to help develop my practice further.
I am a mother of 5 teenage boys, the youngest being identical triplets. This keeps me very busy, but when I do have a spare 5 minutes I enjoy reading and spending time by the sea.
