The Sallygate School is an Independent Special School catering to the unique needs of pupils with SEMH which opened in 2011. Located in the heart of the Alkham Valley, near Dover, the Sallygate School is part of Channels & Choices Therapeutic Community which comprises of several therapeutic residential children’s homes, an independent therapeutic fostering agency and a multi-disciplinary therapy service, including SaLT & OT service.  OFSTED judge 100% of our services as ‘Good’ and ‘Outstanding’.

Channels and Choices specialise in working with children who have experienced trauma at an early age.  We create a secure base for all the children in our care and we focus on achieving seamless transitions so that children can achieve their full potential. Our main aim if for children to live successfully as part of a loving and nurturing family.

Due to the expansion of our education provision we are looking to appoint a Safeguarding Officer to work alongside our Safeguarding Team to promote the welfare and promote the safeguarding of our young people at the Sallygate School.

The post is term time only, 40 weeks a year – 37.5 hours a week, based at the Sallygate School at Kearsney Manor in Kent, working 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday. We offer a competitive salary range:

FTE £25,000 – working 40 weeks plus 5.6 weeks holiday = Pro Rata £21,923.07

FTE £27,000 – working 40 weeks plus 5.6 weeks holiday = Pro Rata £23,676.92

Key responsibilities will include:

  • To work alongside the Assistant Headteacher DSL to make operational and strategic decisions, and facilitate the day to day safeguarding within the school.
  • To support and implement all Sallygate School and Channel & Choices safeguarding and Child Protection policies and procedures.
  • To assist with triaging concerns and alerts raised via CPOMs during the course of the school day.
  • To respond in a timely way and appropriate manner to disclosure or concerns which relate to the safety and welfare of pupils at Sallygate School, and provide creative and appropriate responses to these concerns.
  • To initiate and refer pupils to outside agencies, coordinate referrals, and work closely with agencies such as Social Services, the police and Early Help as necessary.
  • To liaise with school staff in collecting and collating information regarding pupils at Sallygate School, especially for multi agency meetings.
  • To identify pupils at risk of harm and initiate the immediate actions and alerting Assistant Headteacher DSL.
  • To establish supportive working relationships with young people, parents, carers and external agencies.
  • To conduct meetings with parents and external agencies where appropriate.

 

Key Skills & Attributes

Knowledge of current safeguarding legislation, policy and practice relating to children and adults at risk.

Knowledge of what constitutes poor safeguarding practice and unacceptable behaviour which creates safeguarding risks.

Demonstrate a working knowledge of the Equalities Act 2010

Exceptional communication, interpersonal and influencing skills.

Ability to write concise reports and compile case file information.

Capacity to handle confidential data/information sensitively and with discretion.

Effective prioritisation and time-management skills.

Competent and efficient in the use of IT.

 

Personal Qualities

Good team working and organisational skills.

A child-centred approach, able to maintain this perspective and use common sense.

Ability to deal constructively and objectively with people’s emotions (eg upset, distress, conflict, animosity).

Driver with use of own car

 

Professionals qualifications and experience

GCSE English grade C or above

Good numeracy skills – at least to Level 2

Good ICT skills
